FAQ 1: How do university withdrawal policies international students follow affect the F-1 visa grace period?

When an F-1 student receives prior approval for an Authorized Early Withdrawal from their DSO, federal immigration regulations grant a 15-day grace period from the date of authorization to leave the U.S. However, if a student drops out without DSO approval (an unauthorized withdrawal or SEVIS termination for failure to maintain status), there is zero grace period, and the student must depart the U.S. immediately.

FAQ 2: Can I transfer to another US university instead of withdrawing?

Yes. If you wish to leave your current university but continue studying in the U.S., you can request a SEVIS Record Transfer to a new SEVP-certified institution instead of taking a withdrawal. To do this, you must receive an admission letter from the new school and complete the transfer process with your current DSO before your current program enrollment ends.

FAQ 3: What happens if I need to withdraw due to a personal or family medical emergency?

If you face a documented medical issue, you should request a Medical Reduced Course Load (RCL) rather than a standard withdrawal. A Medical RCL allows you to drop classes or take time off while maintaining active legal F-1 status inside the United States, provided you supply medical documentation from a licensed doctor.

FAQ 4: Does an authorized withdrawal affect my future U.S. visa applications?

No. An Authorized Early Withdrawal is a clean, compliant SEVIS termination reason that shows you followed immigration protocols. When re-applying for a U.S. visa in the future, presenting documentation of your DSO's authorization and proof of timely departure within 15 days demonstrates respect for U.S. immigration laws.
